Hello, I am Dr. Karen Surowiec, a Pediatric, Adolescent, and Adult Neuropsychologist.

People often come to me when something feels off and no one can quite explain why. A child might be bright but falling behind, anxious, or having trouble staying focused. A teen might be shutting down, acting out, or constantly overwhelmed. An adult might feel foggy, forgetful, or burned out and wonder if it’s stress, ADHD, anxiety, or something deeper.

I will accompany you on a journey though a map of your mind and help you to understand yourself and discover your unique gifts and talents.

What is a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

A neuropsychological evaluation helps you understand how the brain is working—how you think, learn, focus, remember, and manage emotions. It’s not just testing—it’s a roadmap to understanding what’s behind the struggles you’re seeing and how to move forward with the right support.

A neuropsychological evaluation can help answer questions like:

  • How can I leverage my strengths and improve performance?

  • What’s really going on?

  • Is this ADHD, autism, anxiety, or something else?

  • Why isn’t therapy, tutoring, or medication helping as much as I hoped?

  • What can we do next?

The results give you clear answers and practical recommendations—so you know what’s happening, why it’s happening, and exactly how to help.

What are the Benefits of a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

A neuropsychological evaluation is a powerful tool for gaining insight into how a person thinks, learns, processes emotions, and navigates the world. For individuals who have struggled with school, social situations, attention, or emotional regulation—or for those whose past diagnoses do not quite seem to fit—a comprehensive evaluation can provide the clarity needed to move forward.

Dr. Surowiec’s evaluations are highly individualized, compassionate, and evidence-based. They explore cognitive abilities, language processing, executive functioning, memory, attention, sensory processing, emotional functioning, and social communication. These evaluations help identify diagnoses such as ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, learning disabilities, anxiety, depression, trauma-related disorders, and intellectual disabilities. These evaluations also help identify profiles such as twice-exceptional and pathological demand avoidance (PDA).

The goal of an evaluation is not simply to assign a diagnosis, but to understand the full picture of an individual’s strengths and challenges. Results are used to guide meaningful recommendations for school, work, therapy, accommodations, and support systems. Many families report feeling a sense of relief and empowerment after receiving a thoughtful, well-explained evaluation that finally makes sense of long-standing difficulties.

What are My Next Steps?

If you’re wondering whether a neuropsychological evaluation is right for you or your child, Dr. Surowiec offers a free consultation to answer your questions and discuss what to expect.

The process begins with an initial phone call to learn about your concerns and goals. If testing is recommended, you will be guided through an intake process, where Dr. Surowiec gathers detailed information about development, functioning, and relevant history. Testing appointments are scheduled in a calm, private setting and are designed to help clients feel comfortable, supported, and respected throughout.

Dr. Surowiec works with clients across New York, New Jersey, and PSYPACT participating states via in-person and telehealth options. Dr. Surowiec offers appointments in one of her office across New York and New Jersey, and can offer you in-home appointments as well.
